  • Swage ✌️
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This was the word of the day on Monday as our astronaut Luca Parmitano carried out the third spacewalk to service the cosmic ray hunting Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer AMS-02. Here Luca is suspended above Earth as he is moved to a second worksite to swage, or join, the instrument’s tubes to a new pump system that will give it a new lease on life.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Riding on the @iss’ robotic arm, Luca soared to the cosmic ray detector’s worksite for nearly five hours of space plumbing.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Tomorrow 6 December 2019 at 14:30 CET (13:30 GMT), @nobelprize_org laureates in physics and chemistry will talk to Luca and NASA astronaut @astro_jessica as the Nobel Week festivities begin in Stockholm, Sweden.

  • Space technology is everywhere‼️ 🤚
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The odds are high that you have already interacted with one of our most-far-reaching inventions without realising it. Terahertz security cameras – currently employed in 18 countries including many major airports and the @metrolosangeles – scan passengers for concealed weapons or contraband in their clothing from up to 10 metres away, operating on an entirely passive, non-invasive basis.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There is no need to step into a dedicated machine, as with X-ray scanners – you just walk on by. No radiation is emitted by the imager; instead it works by detecting the extremely high-frequency ‘terahertz’ waves emitted by anything that is warm, including the human body, and highlighting anything blocking these emissions. The scanning resolution is low enough that no anatomical details are revealed.

  • Things are going really well in French Guiana‼️ 🚀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The first test models of @ariane6 are being manufactured while Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, is preparing to test the launch vehicle and all systems involved with launch.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Under our responsibility, upcoming tests will show that the launch complex is ready for Ariane 6, and prove the launch system interfaces and performances for launch.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Engineers will rehearse procedures and test all ground functions in combination with the launch vehicle. Fuel tanks will be filled and drained; Ariane 6’s core stage will be static fired; and test sequences involving a new cryogenic connection system will mimic lift-off conditions.

  • Looking good Orion! 😎
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The Orion spacecraft that will fly farther from Earth on the Artemis I mission than any human-rated vehicle has ever flown before, arrived at NASA’s Plum Brook Station last week. This was the first voyage of the assembled spacecraft – the size of a two-storey house – that includes NASA’s Crew Module and Crew Module Adapter as well as our European Service Module.

  • Hubble Time! 🌌⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Some galaxies are closer friends than others. While many live their own separate, solitary lives, others stray a little too close to a near neighbour and take their relationship to the next level.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
NGC 6286, has done just that! Just out of frame lies its partner, NGC 6285. Together, the duo is named Arp 293 and they are interacting, their mutual gravitational attraction pulling wisps of gas and streams of dust from them, distorting their shapes, and gently smudging and blurring their appearances on the sky — to Earth-based observers, at least.⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Our Council at Ministerial Level, #Space19plus, has concluded in Seville, Spain, with the endorsement of the most ambitious plan to date for our future and the whole European space sector. The meeting brought together ministers with responsibility for space activities in Europe, along with Canada and observers from the EU.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The Member States were asked to approve a comprehensive set of programmes to secure Europe’s independent access to and use of space in the 2020s, boost Europe’s growing space economy, and make breakthrough discoveries about Earth, our Solar System and the Universe beyond, all the while making the responsible choice to strengthen the efforts we are making to secure and protect our planet.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
@pycousteau is a marine conservationist, professional diver and filmmaker. Prior to exploring the oceans like his father Jacques-Yves Cousteau, the famous undersea explorer, he joined us as a Young Graduate Trainee in 2008. Pierre-Yves shares his recollections of working with us and the space sector and his experience of now being the head of his own marine conservation citizen’s organisation.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
One of his ongoing activities, Project Hermes, aims to improve climate models by supplementing sea surface temperatures from satellites with in situ measurements, to better understand and protect the ocean.

In this image captured by @iss commander Luca Parmitano from over 400 km above the sea level, we can see the entirety of the Alps.
When Luca shared this image, he said: "The entire Alpine arc, as we fly eastbound".
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Luca and his spacewalking buddy NASA astronaut @astrodrewmorgan will venture beyond the International Space Station’s airlock for the third time on 2 December as part of a complex series of spacewalks to service the Station’s cosmic ray detector AMS-02.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The spacewalk will start at around 12:50 CET (11:50 GMT) when Luca and Drew exit the Quest airlock and is expected to take around seven and a half hours.
